How we pick

Every product on this site has to pass the same five checks.

1. It has to save more than it costs

We work out the running cost at a typical electric rate and show the math, so you can redo it with your own rate. If a fix doesn't pay for itself in a season or two, we don't recommend it.

2. It has to be safe

Anything that heats must have a safety listing (UL or ETL), automatic shut-off, and overheat or tip-over protection where it applies.

3. It has to work in a rental

We prefer fixes with no drilling and no permanent adhesive. When a pick can mark paint or needs a landlord's OK, we say so on the pick.

4. It has to be a known, well-reviewed product

We choose established brands with a long record and thousands of buyer reviews, and we skip listings that look new or unproven.

5. We tell you the downside

Every pick has a "watch out" line. We don't claim to have tested a product unless we have, and brands can't pay to be included.
